Permit Requirement

Discharge Piping

Discharge piping shall be sized appropriately for the pump and not less than 2 inches in diameter. Piping shall be installed with adequate support and slope. (IL Plumbing Code 890.800(d), 2024 IRC P3005.4)

Check Valve & Shut-off Valve

A check valve (swing or full-port ball check) shall be installed on the discharge pipe immediately downstream of the pump, followed by a full-open gate or ball valve for service access. (IL Plumbing Code 890.800(f), 2024 IRC P3008.2)

Inlet Piping

Inlet piping shall enter the basin above the operating water level and be sealed watertight to the basin. (IL Plumbing Code 890.800(g))

Basin Cover & Sealing

The basin cover shall be gas-tight and bolted or otherwise secured to prevent accidental removal. Penetrations for pipes and wires shall be sealed watertight and gas-tight. (IL Plumbing Code 890.800(g))

Emergency Power/Alarm (Recommendation)

Consideration should be given to installing a battery backup system or high-water alarm for power outages, especially in areas prone to basement flooding. (2024 IRC P2901.1.2 - General protection)

Electrical System Requirements 6 Rules

Dedicated Circuit

Each sewage ejector pump shall be supplied by an individual branch circuit. (2023 NEC 210.23, based on common practice for motor loads and critical equipment)

Circuit Sizing & Overcurrent Protection

Conductors shall be sized to carry the pump's full-load current without overheating. Overcurrent protective devices shall be rated in accordance with the pump's nameplate and NEC Article 430 for motors. (2023 NEC 210.19, 210.20, Article 430)

Disconnecting Means

A readily accessible and lockable manual disconnecting means shall be provided in sight from the pump motor, or be capable of being locked in the open position. (2023 NEC 430.102(B), 430.109)

Grounding & Bonding

All non-current-carrying metal parts of the pump, basin, and associated electrical equipment shall be properly grounded and bonded in accordance with NEC Article 250. (2023 NEC Article 250)

Wiring Methods in Damp/Wet Locations

All wiring and electrical components within the ejector pit or damp locations shall be installed using approved wiring methods suitable for the environment, such as in conduit. Connections must be watertight. (2023 NEC Article 300, 314, and 430)

GFCI Protection

If the ejector pump is cord-and-plug connected and located in an area requiring GFCI protection (e.g., unfinished basement or utility room receptacle), the receptacle shall be GFCI protected. Venting System Requirements 4 Rules

Vent Size

The vent pipe from the sewage ejector basin shall be at least 2 inches in diameter. (IL Plumbing Code 890.800(i))

Vent Connection

The ejector vent shall connect to a building vent stack or extend independently to the open air. It shall not be used as a vent for any other fixture. (IL Plumbing Code 890.800(i))

Vent Termination

Vent pipes terminating outside the building shall extend at least 6 inches above the roof, at least 1 foot above any openable window or other opening within 10 feet horizontally, and in accordance with frost closure requirements for DuPage County (e.g., adequate height to prevent blockage from snow or ice). (IL Plumbing Code 890.1540(a), 2024 IRC P3103.1)

Vent Materials

Vent piping shall be of approved materials suitable for sewage gases, such as PVC, ABS, cast iron, or copper. (IL Plumbing Code 890.510, 2024 IRC P3002)
