General System Requirements

Power Source
All smoke alarms shall receive their primary power from the building wiring and shall be equipped with a battery backup. The alarm shall emit a signal when the batteries are low. Hardwired power shall be from a dedicated branch circuit or a branch circuit that also supplies lighting or other receptacle outlets, as permitted by the NEC, and not subject to switching by an occupant or a ground-fault circuit interrupter unless specifically listed for such application. Circuits shall not be protected by an arc-fault circuit interrupter unless specifically listed for such application and installed on a dedicated circuit.
Interconnection
Where more than one smoke alarm is required to be installed within an individual dwelling unit, the alarms shall be interconnected in such a manner that the activation of one alarm will activate all of the alarms in the individual dwelling unit.
End-of-Life Signaling
Smoke alarms shall be listed in accordance with UL 217 and shall be equipped with a silence feature and a 'hush' feature. Alarms shall provide a visible and audible indication of an end-of-life condition, typically occurring 10 years after the date of manufacture.
Installation
Smoke alarms shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
Placement Requirements (2024 IRC R314)

Sleeping Rooms
Smoke alarms shall be installed in each sleeping room.
Outside Sleeping Rooms
Smoke alarms shall be installed immediately outside each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms.
Each Story
Smoke alarms shall be installed on each additional story of the dwelling, including basements and cellars but not including crawl spaces and uninhabitable attics.
Stairways
In dwelling units with split levels and without an intervening door between the adjacent levels, a smoke alarm installed on the upper level shall suffice for the adjacent lower level provided that the lower level is less than one full story below the upper level. Where there is an intervening door, smoke alarms shall be installed on both levels.
Distance from Cooking Appliances
Smoke alarms shall not be located within a 10-foot (3048 mm) horizontal path from a permanently installed cooking appliance.
Prohibited Locations
Do not install smoke alarms in locations where normal ambient air conditions may activate the alarm (e.g., near return air vents, bathrooms with excessive steam, kitchens unless specified as suitable for kitchen environments). Alarms should not be placed in garages.
Wall and Ceiling Placement
On ceilings, alarms shall be located a minimum of 4 inches (102 mm) from any wall. On walls, alarms shall be located between 4 inches (102 mm) and 12 inches (305 mm) from the ceiling.

Branch Circuit Requirements
Smoke alarms shall be supplied by an individual branch circuit, or a branch circuit that also supplies lighting or other receptacle outlets, and not subject to switching by an occupant or a ground-fault circuit interrupter unless specifically listed for such application. Where a general-purpose circuit is utilized, the circuit must meet all applicable AFCI requirements unless the smoke detector is listed for use on such a circuit and the circuit is dedicated.
Arc-Fault Circuit-Interrupter (AFCI) Protection
AFCI protection is generally required for 120-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-ampere branch circuits supplying outlets or devices in dwelling unit bedrooms and other specified areas. Smoke alarms connected to such circuits must either be listed for use with AFCI protection or be installed on a dedicated circuit that is exempt per NEC 210.12(B) if the smoke alarm system is listed as a fire alarm system.
Wiring Methods
All wiring shall comply with NEC Chapter 3, Wiring Methods and Materials. Typically, nonmetallic-sheathed cable (Type NM-B) is used for residential applications, protected in accordance with NEC 334. Boxes shall comply with NEC Article 314.
Grounding and Bonding
All electrical components and metallic enclosures shall be effectively grounded and bonded in accordance with NEC Article 250.
Splicing
All splices and connections shall be made in approved boxes, enclosures, or fittings, and shall be accessible.
Permitting, Inspection & Maintenance

Permit Requirement
Installation or significant modification of a hardwired smoke detector network within a dwelling unit typically requires an electrical permit from your local building department prior to commencement of work.
Inspections
Rough-in and final electrical inspections are required to verify compliance with the 2023 NEC and 2024 IRC. The local building department will specify required inspection stages.
Testing and Maintenance
Smoke alarms should be tested monthly by the occupant by pushing the test button. Batteries should be replaced annually, or when the low-battery signal sounds. Alarms should be replaced every 10 years from the date of manufacture or sooner if they fail to function.
Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarms
Per Illinois law, CO alarms are required within 15 feet of every sleeping area in dwelling units containing a fuel-burning appliance or an attached garage. While separate from smoke alarms, combination smoke/CO alarms are common and must meet both IRC/UL 217 and UL 2034 standards.
DuPage County & Illinois Specific Considerations

Adopted Codes
DuPage County, and its local municipalities, adopt the International Residential Code (IRC) and National Electrical Code (NEC) as base codes, often with local amendments. This playbook specifically references the 2024 IRC and 2023 NEC.
Frost Depth
While not directly applicable to smoke detectors, all exterior footings and foundations for any structure in DuPage County shall extend to a minimum depth of 42 inches below grade to prevent damage from frost heave.
Illinois Plumbing Code
The Illinois Plumbing Code governs the design, installation, and maintenance of plumbing systems. It does not directly apply to the installation of hardwired smoke detector networks, which fall under the purview of electrical and building codes.
Local Amendments
