A building permit is required from your local building department prior to any installation. This ensures compliance with all applicable codes.
Approved Plans
Submit manufacturer's specifications, structural attachment details, and electrical schematic to your local building department for review and approval.

Installation should be performed by qualified professionals, typically manufacturer-certified technicians or licensed contractors, to ensure compliance with all codes and safety standards.

Anchoring and Support
Chair lift rails and components must be securely fastened to structural framing members (e.g., studs, joists) capable of supporting the weight of the lift, occupant, and dynamic loads. IRC R502, R602.
Stairway Egress Clearances
When the chair lift is in a stored or operational position, a minimum clear width of the stairway, or at least 20 inches (508 mm), shall be maintained as part of the means of egress path, provided the total width of the stairway is at least 36 inches (914 mm). IRC R311.7.9.1, R311.7.9.4 Exception 2.
Landings
Clear and level landings are required at the top and bottom of the stairway, extending at least the width of the stairway and 36 inches (914 mm) in length in the direction of travel. IRC R311.7.7.
Handrails
If the chair lift installation necessitates removal or modification of an existing handrail, the remaining handrail must comply with IRC R311.7.8. If no compliant handrail remains, a new compliant handrail or alternative grasping surface must be provided.
Guardrails
Guardrails, if present or required due to modifications, shall comply with IRC R312.1 (minimum height of 36 inches for open-sided walking surfaces more than 30 inches above the floor or grade below).

Dedicated Circuit
Chair lifts typically require a dedicated 120-volt, 15-amp or 20-amp branch circuit, protected by an overcurrent device. Consult manufacturer specifications for exact requirements. NEC 210.20, 210.21, 210.23.
Receptacle Outlets
If cord-and-plug connected, the receptacle shall be a dedicated 120-volt receptacle on a dedicated circuit. Receptacles located in unfinished basements or outdoors shall have Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter (GFCI) protection. NEC 210.8, 210.21(B), 406.4.
Wiring Methods
All wiring methods shall comply with NEC Chapter 3 (e.g., NM cable, EMT, FMC). All conductors must be properly sized, secured, and protected. NEC Chapter 3.
Emergency Stop & Battery Backup
Ensure manufacturer-provided emergency stop functions and battery backup systems are operational and maintained. These are critical safety features of listed equipment, allowing operation during power outages.

The chair lift must be installed in strict accordance with the manufacturer's printed instructions and specifications, which are approved during the permit process. IRC R104.2.
Safety Sensors
Ensure all safety sensors (e.g., obstruction sensors, seatbelt interlocks) are functioning correctly as designed by the manufacturer to prevent operation if obstructed or unsafe.
Controls
Controls must be easily operable by the intended user and located within reach from the seated position. Removable key controls are recommended for child safety and unauthorized use.
Load Capacity
The chair lift must be selected and installed to safely support the manufacturer-rated load capacity. Posting of load capacity is recommended.

Impact on Existing Plumbing
Chair lift installation shall not compromise or interfere with existing plumbing systems, piping, or fixtures. Any structural modification affecting plumbing supports or access must be re-evaluated for compliance with the Illinois Plumbing Code. Refer to Illinois Plumbing Code 890.310 (Supports).
Clearances
Maintain adequate clearances around existing plumbing access panels, cleanouts, and fixtures. Avoid direct contact or encasement of plumbing components unless specifically designed and approved.
Inspections & Final Approval

Rough-In Electrical Inspection
If new wiring is installed within walls or concealed spaces, a rough-in electrical inspection is required by your local building department before covering walls.
Final Electrical Inspection
Upon completion of all electrical work, a final electrical inspection is required to ensure compliance with the 2023 NEC.
Final Building Inspection
A final building inspection is required upon completion of all structural, mechanical, and safety aspects of the installation to ensure compliance with the 2024 IRC and approved plans.
Certificate of Occupancy/Completion
A Certificate of Occupancy or Certificate of Completion may be issued by your local building department once all inspections are passed and all conditions of the permit are met.
