Excavation & Subgrade Preparation 3 Rules

Subgrade Compaction

Depth of Excavation

Utility Protection During Excavation

All existing underground utilities identified during JULIE locate must be protected from damage during excavation. This includes maintaining proper clearances and support. Refer to NEC 300.5 and Illinois Plumbing Code for specific requirements.

Base Course Specifications 4 Rules

Base Material Type

An aggregate base course, typically crushed stone or gravel (e.g., IDOT CA-6 or equivalent), shall be used. Material must be clean, free of organic matter, and well-graded.

Base Course Thickness

A minimum 6 inches (152 mm) compacted thickness is required for typical residential driveways. Thicker bases (8-12 inches) may be required for heavy vehicle traffic, poor subgrade conditions, or as dictated by engineering design.

Base Course Compaction

The aggregate base course shall be uniformly compacted to a minimum of 95% Modified Proctor Density to provide a stable, non-yielding support for the driveway slab and minimize future settlement or frost heave.

Drainage Layer Function

Ensure the base course and subgrade are designed and installed to allow for proper drainage, preventing water accumulation that can lead to frost heave in DuPage County's climate.

Driveway Slab Construction (Concrete) 6 Rules

Concrete Strength

Minimum 4,000 psi (27.6 MPa) compressive strength at 28 days for exterior concrete exposed to freeze-thaw cycles. Concrete shall contain 6-8% air entrainment for enhanced durability against deicing salts and temperature fluctuations, as per ACI 318 (referenced by 2024 IRC).

Slab Thickness

Minimum 4 inches (102 mm) thickness for typical residential vehicle traffic. 5-6 inches (127-152 mm) is recommended for heavier vehicles, high traffic areas, or when poor subgrade conditions exist. IRC R404.1.2 (general principle for structural concrete).

Reinforcement

Welded wire fabric (e.g., 6x6-W2.9x2.9 or 6x6-10/10) or steel rebar (e.g., #3 bars at 18-24 inch on center) shall be placed at approximately mid-depth or upper third of the slab to control cracking. IRC R602.10 (general reinforcing principles).

Expansion Joints

Provide expansion joints where the driveway abuts a structure (garage, foundation, sidewalk, curb) and at intervals not exceeding 50 feet. Use a compressible filler material (e.g., asphalt impregnated fiberboard) at least 1/2 inch thick, extending the full depth of the slab. ACI 330R.

Contraction (Control) Joints

Saw-cut or tooled control joints shall be provided at maximum intervals of 10-15 feet in both directions, forming square or rectangular panels. The depth of the joint shall be a minimum of 1/4 of the slab thickness to effectively control random cracking. ACI 330R.

Surface Finish & Curing

Surface finish shall be slip-resistant (e.g., broom finish). Proper curing procedures (e.g., wet curing, curing compounds, blankets) must be implemented immediately after finishing and maintained for at least 7 days to achieve specified strength and durability. ACI 308.1.

Frost Protection & Drainage (DuPage Climate Specific) 4 Rules

Frost Depth Consideration

The official frost depth for DuPage County is 42 inches (1067 mm). While a driveway slab typically 'floats,' proper subgrade preparation, drainage, and base course design are critical to mitigate differential frost heave. Any integral structural elements, such as footings for retaining walls immediately adjacent to the driveway, must extend to 42 inches below grade or to undisturbed soil.

Driveway Slope for Drainage

The driveway shall be sloped away from the dwelling at a minimum of 2% (1/4 inch per foot) for a distance of at least 10 feet (3048 mm) to ensure positive drainage of surface water away from the foundation. IRC R401.3.

Surface Water Management

Design must ensure positive drainage of surface water off the driveway and away from structures, preventing ponding or channeling water onto adjacent properties or public right-of-way. Compliance with DuPage County Stormwater Management Ordinance is critical for managing runoff.

Auxiliary Drainage Systems

Where necessary due to site conditions or grade, incorporate swales, trench drains, or catch basins connected to an approved drainage system (e.g., storm sewer or infiltration system) to manage stormwater runoff effectively. Installation of such systems must comply with the Illinois Plumbing Code for connections to storm sewers.

Electrical & Plumbing Protection 4 Rules

Underground Electrical Wiring (Below Driveway)

Underground conductors and cables beneath driveways and parking areas shall be installed with minimum cover requirements as specified in 2023 NEC Table 300.5. For example, rigid metal conduit (RMC) or intermediate metal conduit (IMC) requires 6 inches (152 mm) cover. Nonmetallic raceways (e.g., Schedule 80 PVC) require 18 inches (457 mm) cover, and Type UF cable requires 12 inches (305 mm) cover (subject to exceptions and specific conditions). All wiring must be protected from physical damage. NEC 300.5.

Protection of Underground Electrical Cables

Wiring installed under concrete slabs shall be located in raceways or approved cable assemblies. Raceways shall be listed for the purpose and capable of withstanding the anticipated physical damage and weight load. NEC 300.5, 300.6.

Underground Plumbing Lines (Below Driveway)

Underground water service and sewer pipes crossing or beneath driveways shall maintain minimum cover requirements as per the Illinois Plumbing Code to protect against freezing and physical damage. Water service pipes typically require a minimum of 42 inches (1067 mm) cover (matching DuPage County's frost depth). Sewer lines require sufficient cover, proper bedding, and backfill to maintain grade and protect from damage. IPC 305.4, 306.3.

Separation of Utilities

Maintain required separation distances between water and sewer lines (e.g., 10 feet horizontal, 1 foot vertical if crossing, as per Illinois Plumbing Code 305.4.2) and between electrical and plumbing lines as per NEC 300.8 to prevent cross-contamination or interference.

Property Line Setbacks

Adhere to all setback requirements from property lines as established by your local municipality's zoning ordinance. These can vary and must be confirmed prior to construction.

Public Right-of-Way
