Permitting and General Requirements

Obtain all necessary permits from your local municipality prior to commencing any work. Work must pass required inspections.

All installations must comply with local zoning ordinances regarding placement, setbacks, and visual impact.

Perform a comprehensive load calculation to ensure the existing electrical service can safely accommodate the additional demand of the EV charger without requiring an upgrade.

Provide appropriately sized overcurrent protection (circuit breaker or fuse) for the EVSE branch circuit.

Conductors must be sized for 125% of the continuous current rating of the EVSE.

Install a readily accessible means of disconnect for the EVSE.

Provide ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI) protection for all EVSE and associated receptacles at dwelling units.

Wiring methods and materials must be suitable for the environment (e.g., wet locations for outdoor installations).

Underground wiring for outdoor installations shall be installed at a minimum depth of 42 inches below grade to mitigate frost heave damage common in DuPage County, and in appropriate raceway.

Plumbing Code Considerations (Illinois Plumbing Code)

Trenching for underground electrical conduits must not compromise the integrity or required separation distances of existing water service lines, sanitary sewer lines, or stormwater drainage systems.

Protection of potable water supply from potential contamination during all phases of construction, especially when disturbing soil near water mains or service lines.
