Combustion Air

Clearances to Combustibles

Fuel Gas Piping & Connection

Fuel gas piping must be properly sized, installed, supported, and leak-tested. An accessible approved manual shutoff valve must be installed upstream of the appliance. A drip leg (sediment trap) is required where sediment traps are common. IRC G2412, G2413, G2419.4

Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) Discharge

Boiler pressure relief valves must discharge to an approved location, not subject to freezing, in a manner that does not create a hazard, and with an indirect connection to the drainage system. Discharge piping must be full size of the valve outlet, pitched for drainage, and terminate with an air gap. IRC M1804.2

Expansion Tank

An adequately sized and properly installed expansion tank is required for closed hydronic heating systems to accommodate thermal expansion of water. IRC M1801.8

Temperature and Pressure Controls

Boilers must be equipped with automatic controls to prevent water temperature from exceeding 250°F (121°C) and pressure from exceeding the maximum working pressure. Low-water cutoff controls are mandatory for steam boilers and hot water boilers over 400,000 BTU/hr input. IRC M1801.6

Condensate Drainage (for Condensing Boilers)

Condensate from high-efficiency condensing boilers must be collected, drained, and discharged to an approved indirect waste receptor or acidic waste neutralization system as per local plumbing code, preventing freezing and corrosion. Illinois Plumbing Code, Section 890.1840(a)(8) and manufacturer specifications.

Boiler Water Supply & Backflow Prevention

Make-up water supply to a boiler must be protected by an approved backflow prevention device (e.g., double check valve assembly or pressure vacuum breaker where applicable) to prevent contamination of the potable water system. Illinois Plumbing Code, Section 890.1130(a); IRC P2903.8.1

Drainage Connections for PRV & Blowdown

All discharge from relief valves and boiler blowdown must terminate to an approved indirect waste receptor with a proper air gap, preventing cross-connection with the sanitary drainage system. Illinois Plumbing Code, Section 890.1840(a)(8)

Electrical System Requirements 4 Rules

Dedicated Circuit & Disconnecting Means

The boiler system and associated controls shall be supplied by a dedicated branch circuit. An accessible, readily identifiable manual disconnect switch or circuit breaker must be provided at the boiler or within sight of it, or as permitted by NEC 422.31(B). NEC 422.12, 422.31

Overcurrent Protection

All electrical circuits supplying the boiler system must be protected by appropriately sized overcurrent protective devices (circuit breakers or fuses) as per equipment ratings and NEC requirements. NEC 240

Grounding and Bonding

The boiler system and all associated metallic piping and equipment must be properly grounded and bonded in accordance with the National Electrical Code to ensure electrical safety. NEC 250

Wiring Methods

All wiring must be installed in accordance with NEC requirements for conductor sizing, insulation, and protection, utilizing approved wiring methods (e.g., EMT, IMC, MC cable, Romex where appropriate). NEC 300
