Applicable Codes

Cable Type Selection
Cables installed in plenums or other environmental air-handling spaces shall be plenum-rated (Type CMP). Cables run vertically between floors in shafts shall be riser-rated (Type CMR). Cables in general purpose areas shall be general-purpose rated (Type CM or CMG). NEC 805.170, 805.179.
Cable Support
Cables shall be supported by strapping, staples, hangers, or similar continuous means and shall not be damaged by the support method. Cables shall not be solely supported by other cables. NEC 805.24.
Cable Bending Radius
Maintain the manufacturer-specified minimum bending radius (typically 4-8 times the cable diameter) to prevent damage to conductors and insulation, which can degrade signal performance.
Protection Against Physical Damage
Where communications cables are exposed to physical damage, they shall be protected by suitable raceway or other means. Cables passing through bored holes in wood framing members shall be at least 1-1/4 inches from the nearest edge of the framing member or protected by steel plates. IRC E3802.2.1.

Firestopping Requirements
All penetrations of fire-resistance-rated assemblies (e.g., firewalls, fire-rated floor/ceiling assemblies, draftstopping) by communications cables shall be firestopped in accordance with IRC R302.4 and NEC 805.11(C).
Annular Space Sealing
The annular space around communications cables penetrating a fire-rated assembly shall be sealed with an approved firestop material to prevent the passage of flame and hot gases. IRC R302.4.
Separation from Power/Electrical Wiring

Separation Distances
Communications cables shall be separated from power conductors by at least 2 inches, or by a permanent barrier. Where communications cables are in metal raceways, this separation requirement may be modified. NEC 805.133(A)(1)(c).
Avoiding Shared Raceways/Enclosures
Communications cables shall not be placed in any raceway, compartment, outlet box, junction box, or similar fitting with conductors of electric light, power, Class 1, or medium power network-powered broadband communications circuits. NEC 805.133(A)(1)(a).
Grounding & Bonding (Low Voltage)

Communications System Grounding
All communications circuits and equipment, where required to be grounded, shall be bonded to the building's grounding electrode system or to the nearest accessible point on the building grounding electrode conductor in accordance with NEC Article 250 and 805.90.
Metallic Components Bonding
Exposed non-current-carrying metallic parts of communications equipment, such as racks, cabinets, and metallic cable sheaths, shall be bonded to the building's grounding electrode system. NEC 805.90.
Wall Boxes & Outlets

Outlet Box Installation
Low-voltage wall boxes and mounting brackets for communications outlets shall be securely fastened to building structure in accordance with manufacturer instructions and good construction practices. Ensure adequate depth for cable bend radius and termination.
Accessibility
