Permitting and Inspections

Permit Application
IRC R105.1, NEC 90.4. All electrical installations and modifications require a permit from your local building department.
Licensed Contractor Requirement
DuPage County regional standard. All electrical work, including the installation of Whole House Surge Protectors (WHSPS), shall be performed by an Illinois licensed electrical contractor.
Final Electrical Inspection
IRC R109.1.3, NEC 90.4. A final electrical inspection is required by the local building department to verify compliance with all applicable codes before the system is energized for permanent use.

Surge Protective Device (SPD) Specifics

Mandatory SPD Installation for Dwelling Units
NEC 230.67(A). For dwelling units, all services supplying dwelling units shall have a Type 1 or Type 2 SPD installed at the service or within the service equipment. This is a mandatory requirement for new services and significant service modifications.
SPD Rating (Nominal Discharge Current)
NEC 230.67(B). The SPD must have a minimum nominal discharge current rating (I_n) of 10 kA.
SPD Location
NEC 230.67(A), NEC 285.4, NEC 285.5. The SPD shall be installed in or on the service equipment or immediately adjacent thereto. Placement should minimize conductor length.
SPD Listing
NEC 285.3. SPDs shall be listed for the purpose (e.g., UL 1449).
Grounding and Bonding for SPDs

Grounding Electrode Conductor (GEC) Connection
NEC 285.25. The SPD shall be connected to the service grounding electrode conductor or to the equipment grounding terminal bar in the service equipment enclosure.
Connection Path Length and Bends
