Floor Loading
Ensure floor framing can adequately support the weight of the completed shower enclosure, including tile, bench, and occupants. (2024 IRC R301.1, R502.2)
Wall Framing
Framing shall be plumb, square, and adequately braced to support interior finishes and steam door. Headers for openings shall comply with IRC requirements. (2024 IRC R602)
Ceiling Height
Minimum ceiling height within the shower enclosure shall be 80 inches (2032 mm). (2024 IRC R305.1)
Vapor Barrier / Water-Resistive Barrier
A continuous, impermeable vapor barrier (Class I) shall be installed on the warm-in-winter side of the wall and ceiling assembly around the steam shower enclosure to prevent moisture migration into the wall cavity. Moisture-resistant cement backer board or equivalent shall be used for tile substrate. Enclosure Sealing

Water Supply Connection

Drainage for Generator
The steam generator's relief valve discharge and/or drain pan connection shall be piped to an indirect waste receptor or floor drain, with an air gap as required. (Illinois Plumbing Code 890.1130(b))
Steam Line & Insulation
Steam lines shall be rigid copper or other approved high-temperature piping, sloped back to the generator or drained. Lines shall be insulated to prevent excessive heat loss and condensation. (Manufacturer's instructions; Illinois Plumbing Code, Section 890.1130 (Implied))
Shower Pan & Receptor
The shower receptor shall be water-tight, sloped a minimum of 1/4 inch per foot to the drain, and lined with an approved membrane extending up the walls at least 3 inches above the finished curb. (Illinois Plumbing Code 890.1330)
Shower Drain Trap
A properly sized and vented trap shall be installed for the shower drain to prevent sewer gases from entering the living space. (Illinois Plumbing Code 890.210, 890.720)
Backflow Prevention
