Gas Piping Materials & Sizing 3 Rules

Approved piping materials shall be limited to: black steel pipe (Schedule 40 or greater), corrugated stainless steel tubing (CSST) listed and certified to ANSI LC 1/CSA 6.26 and properly bonded/grounded, or polyethylene (PE) pipe for underground use only (meeting ASTM D2513), provided it is installed in strict accordance with manufacturer's instructions and protected from damage.

Gas pipe sizing shall be determined by an approved method, such as tables in IFGC/IRC Chapter 4, to ensure adequate pressure and volume for the connected appliance (fire pit burner) based on BTUH rating, length of run, and available pressure. Where plastic pipe emerges from the ground or passes through a foundation wall, it shall be protected by a steel casing or approved sleeving extending at least 12 inches (305 mm) above grade and extending through the wall.

Underground piping shall be installed in a trench free from sharp objects, rocks, or other materials that could damage the pipe. A minimum of 4 inches (102 mm) of compacted backfill (e.g., sand) shall be placed around and above the pipe before final backfilling.

Piping above ground shall be securely supported by approved hangers, straps, or blocks at intervals not exceeding those specified in the code based on pipe material and size.

Testing & Inspection 3 Rules

Upon completion of gas piping installation, and prior to concealing any portion of the system, the piping shall be tested for leaks by the installer using air pressure (not gas) to not less than 1.5 times the proposed operating pressure, but not less than 3 psig (20 kPa gauge) for a duration determined by the inspection authority, but not less than 10 minutes. The test gauge must be accurate to 1/10th of a pound.

A rough-in inspection is required by your local building department after the gas line is installed and pressure tested, but before it is covered.
