Liner Material Suitability

Metal Liner Specifications
Metal liners for gas appliances shall be of stainless steel, aluminum, or other approved corrosion-resistant material suitable for the flue gases. Thermal Protection

Liner Sizing
The cross-sectional area of the chimney liner shall be sized in accordance with the appliance manufacturer's instructions and the tables/methods specified in IRC Chapter 24 (Fuel Gas) for gas appliances, ensuring adequate draft and prevention of condensation. (IRC R1001.11.2, G2427.5, G2427.10.1.2)
Chimney Termination Height
The chimney shall extend at least 3 feet above the point where it passes through the roof and at least 2 feet higher than any portion of a building within 10 feet horizontally. (IRC R1001.3)
Liner Joints & Sealing
Joints in flexible metal liners shall be smoke-tight and secured with approved methods. Rigid liners shall have tight-fitting, corrosion-resistant joints, sealed with an approved high-temperature sealant compatible with the liner material. (IRC R1001.11, G2427.6.2)
Insulation for Performance
Liners in exterior chimneys or those subject to significant heat loss, common in DuPage County's cold climate, shall be insulated to prevent condensation, improve draft, reduce creosote buildup (for solid fuel), and protect the chimney structure. (IRC G2427.10.1.1, UL 1777)
Condensate Drainage

Appliance Connector Requirements
Chimney connectors for appliances shall be of approved materials, correctly sized, and installed with proper pitch to the liner. Connectors shall not pass through any floor or ceiling, nor through any fire-resistance-rated wall or enclosure. (IRC G2427.6.1, G2427.6.5)
Multiple Appliance Venting
Where multiple appliances are connected to a single common liner, the common vent system shall be appropriately sized for the total input rating of all connected appliances, and connectors must enter at different levels to prevent blockage. (IRC G2427.6.2)
Combustion Air
Adequate combustion air shall be provided for all fuel-burning appliances connected to the chimney liner, in accordance with IRC Chapter 24 (Fuel Gas) Section G2407, to ensure safe and efficient operation. (IRC G2407.1)
Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Approved carbon monoxide alarms shall be installed in existing dwellings where fuel-fired appliances are installed or chimneys are present, as required by DuPage County ordinances. (IRC R315.2)

Masonry chimneys shall maintain a minimum of 2 inches (51 mm) clearance to combustibles. Firestopping
All spaces between the chimney and floors or ceilings shall be firestopped with noncombustible materials to prevent the passage of flame and smoke. (IRC R1001.13.1)
Inspection & Testing
