Permit Requirements

Licensed Contractors

Low-Voltage Wiring (Class 2 and Class 3 Circuits)

Motorized shading systems operating at 50 volts or less (Class 2 or Class 3 circuits) shall comply with NEC 725, particularly articles 725.130 through 725.154 for installation requirements, separation from power circuits, and cable markings. Power-limited circuit cables shall not be placed in the same raceway or enclosure with electric light or power conductors unless specifically permitted.

Disconnecting Means

A readily accessible means of disconnecting the motor(s) from its supply circuit shall be provided, within sight of the motor and controller location, or lockable in the open position per NEC 430.102 and 430.108.

Accessibility

Electrical equipment (e.g., controllers, power supplies) shall be installed in a manner that provides ready access for examination, operating, and maintenance per NEC 110.26.

Grounding and Bonding

All metallic non-current-carrying parts of equipment, where required, shall be effectively grounded and bonded in accordance with NEC 250.

Splices and Terminations

All splices and terminations of electrical conductors shall be made in approved enclosures or boxes and comply with NEC 110.14.

Wiring in Plenums/Air-Handling Spaces

Any wiring installed in environmental air-handling spaces (plenums) shall comply with the specific requirements of NEC 300.22, typically requiring plenum-rated cables.

Mounting Integrity

Clearances

Sufficient clearances shall be maintained around the motorized shading system to prevent interference with window operation, trim, and other building elements. Ensure the system does not hinder the intended function or maintenance of other building components.

Building Envelope Penetrations

If any wiring or components penetrate the building envelope (exterior walls), these penetrations shall be properly sealed and insulated to prevent air and moisture infiltration and maintain thermal performance per IRC Chapters 11 (Energy Efficiency) and R703 (Exterior Walls).

Emergency Escape and Rescue Openings

Motorized window shading systems shall not impede the operation of any required emergency escape and rescue openings (windows) per IRC R310. These openings must be readily operable from the inside without the use of tools, keys, or special knowledge to allow for emergency egress.

Wiring in Fire-Resistance-Rated Assemblies

Any wiring passing through or installed within fire-resistance-rated walls, floor/ceiling assemblies, or shaft enclosures shall be installed in a manner that maintains the fire-resistance rating of the assembly per IRC R302.

DuPage County Regional Context & Non-Applicability 2 Rules

Climate & Regional Construction Standards

DuPage County's 42-inch frost depth requirement (IRC R403.1.1) is not directly applicable to interior motorized window shading systems. However, any exterior components, if part of the system, shall be rated for local climate conditions, including extreme temperature fluctuations, ice, and wind loads, and installed according to relevant IRC sections.

Illinois Plumbing Code Applicability

The Illinois Plumbing Code (77 Ill. Adm. Code 890) is generally not applicable to the installation of motorized window shading systems, as these systems do not involve water supply, drainage, or sanitary systems.
