Permit Requirement
A building permit is required from your local municipality prior to commencing any work. Submittal will include plans detailing the proposed installation.
Licensed Professional
All electrical work shall be performed by, or under the direct supervision of, an Illinois licensed electrician, and in accordance with all applicable codes.
Plan Submittal
Detailed electrical plans, including a site plan, proposed wiring diagrams, load calculations, and EVSE specifications, must be submitted with the permit application. (2024 IRC R106.1, R105.2)
Code Compliance
All installations shall comply with the 2024 International Residential Code (IRC), 2023 National Electrical Code (NEC), and the Illinois Plumbing Code (where applicable).
Electrical Service & Load Calculation

Service Load Calculation
A detailed electrical load calculation (per NEC Article 220) must be performed to ensure the existing dwelling electrical service can safely accommodate the additional EV charging load. The EVSE is considered a continuous load.
Service Capacity
The existing dwelling unit's electrical service capacity must be sufficient. If not, a service upgrade in accordance with NEC Article 230 will be required.
Dedicated Circuit
The EV charging station must be supplied by a dedicated branch circuit. (NEC 210.21, 210.23)
Panel Space
Adequate physical space and suitable overcurrent protection must be available in the existing electrical panel, or a subpanel must be installed.
Wiring & Overcurrent Protection

Conductor Sizing
Conductors supplying the EVSE must be sized for 125% of the continuous load, based on the EVSE's maximum current rating, in accordance with NEC 210.19(A)(1) and NEC 240.4.
Overcurrent Protection
Overcurrent protective devices (circuit breakers) must be sized at 125% of the continuous load per NEC 210.20 and NEC 240.4.
Wiring Methods
Approved wiring methods for dwelling units (e.g., NM cable in dry, protected locations; conduit for wet or exposed locations) shall be used as per NEC Chapter 3.
Underground Wiring (Outdoor)
Underground conductors and cables shall comply with NEC 300.5. For DuPage County's 42-inch frost depth, conduit installations should consider protection from frost heave and mechanical damage, often exceeding minimum NEC cover depths for practical longevity.
Raceway Fill
Raceway fill shall comply with NEC Chapter 9, Tables 1 and 4, and NEC 310.15(B)(3)(a).
Charging Equipment (EVSE) Installation

All EV charging equipment (EVSE) must be listed and labeled by a recognized testing laboratory (e.g., UL, ETL) for its intended use. (NEC 110.3(B))
Installation Instructions
EVSE shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and listing requirements. (NEC 110.3(B))
Disconnecting Means
A readily accessible disconnecting means shall be provided for the EVSE. For cord-and-plug connections, the receptacle serves this function. For hardwired units, the circuit breaker may serve as the disconnecting means if within sight or lockable. (NEC 625.43)
Receptacle Requirements (if applicable)
Receptacles rated 50 amperes or less and 250 volts or less installed for EVSE shall have ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection for personnel. (NEC 625.54)
Mounting
EVSE shall be securely mounted to a structurally sound surface capable of supporting its weight. (2024 IRC R301)
Grounding & Bonding

Equipment Grounding
All non-current-carrying metallic parts of the EVSE and associated raceways, enclosures, and equipment must be effectively grounded. (NEC Article 250)
Grounding Electrode System
The EVSE equipment grounding conductor must be connected to the dwelling's grounding electrode system. (NEC 250.50)
Outdoor Installation & DuPage Climate

NEMA Rating
EVSE and associated enclosures installed outdoors must be listed and rated for outdoor use (e.g., NEMA 3R, 4, or 4X) to withstand DuPage County's climate conditions. (NEC 110.3(B))
Weather Protection
Outdoor receptacles, boxes, and conduit bodies must be of a weatherproof type and installed to prevent the entrance of moisture. (NEC 314.15, 406.9)
Physical Protection
Outdoor wiring and equipment shall be protected from physical damage. (NEC 300.5)
Frost Depth Consideration
While NEC 300.5 Table specifies minimum cover, for DuPage County's 42-inch frost depth, underground conduits and direct-buried cables should be installed with consideration for frost heave and mechanical protection, often necessitating deeper burial than minimums if not otherwise protected.
Inspections & Final Approval
