Maximum Cross Slope

Minimum Clear Ramp Width
36 inches minimum between handrails. IRC R311.8.3
Landings at Top and Bottom
Required at the top and bottom of each ramp run and where ramps change direction. Must be at least as wide as the ramp run and 60 inches long. IRC R311.8.4
Handrail Requirements
Required on both sides of ramps with a rise greater than 6 inches or a horizontal projection greater than 72 inches. IRC R311.8.5
Handrail Height
Between 34 and 38 inches above the ramp surface. IRC R311.8.5.1
Handrail Continuity
Must be continuous for the full length of each ramp run. IRC R311.8.5.2
Handrail Extensions
Extensions required at the top and bottom of ramp runs. IRC R311.8.5.4
Edge Protection

Ramps and landings must be designed to support dead and live loads as specified for egress components. Minimum live load for egress components is 40 psf. IRC R301.1.1, Table R301.1.5
Frost Protection
All footings and foundations for exterior ramps must extend to a minimum depth of 42 inches below finished grade or be designed to resist frost heave in accordance with an approved engineered design. IRC R403.1.4.1 (DuPage County local amendment/standard)
Footing Dimensions
Minimum 6-inch thickness and 12-inch width for continuous concrete footings, or appropriately sized for isolated piers based on soil bearing capacity and applied loads. IRC R403.1
Wood in Contact with Ground
All wood members in contact with the ground, concrete, or exposed to weather shall be approved pressure-preservative-treated wood, naturally durable wood, or be naturally decay-resistant. IRC R317.1
Fasteners
Fasteners used in pressure-preservative-treated wood shall be hot-dipped galvanized steel, stainless steel, silicon bronze, or copper. IRC R317.3
Guardrail Height (where required)
Guards are required where the walking surface is more than 30 inches above the adjacent grade. Minimum height 36 inches for residential applications. IRC R312.1.2
Guardrail Openings
Openings in guards shall not allow a 4-inch sphere to pass through. IRC R312.1.3

The site shall be graded to provide drainage away from the ramp structure and adjacent buildings to prevent water accumulation and foundation saturation. IRC R401.3
Material Durability

Snow and Ice Management
Design should consider ease of snow and ice removal, and material choice should minimize slip hazards in winter conditions.
