Required Permits

Required Inspections
IRC R109.1. Stage inspections, including rough-in plumbing (before concealment), rough-in electrical, concrete pre-pour (pipes/cables in place, insulation, vapor retarder), and final inspections for all trades, will be conducted by the local building department.

Foundation & Slab Design (DuPage County Climate)
IRC R403.1.1 (Frost Protection). All foundations, including slab-on-grade perimeters, must extend to a minimum depth of 42 inches below finished grade or be protected from frost in accordance with accepted engineering practice for DuPage County. Slabs incorporating radiant heating must be designed to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction without compromising structural integrity or system components.
Sub-Slab Insulation
IRC N1102.2.8, R402.2.9 (Slab-on-grade insulation). Rigid insulation with an appropriate R-value (as per the energy code and system design) must be installed directly beneath and around the perimeter of the heated slab to minimize heat loss to the ground and edges. Edge insulation is critical for performance in the DuPage County climate.
Sub-Slab Vapor Retarder
IRC R506.2.3. A Class A vapor retarder (minimum 6-mil polyethylene or approved equivalent) shall be installed between the subbase and the concrete slab where the slab is not exposed to the ground, to prevent moisture migration.
Pipe/Cable Embedment
Manufacturer's instructions, industry best practices. Radiant heating pipes or cables must be securely fastened to the sub-slab insulation or wire mesh, spaced as per design, and completely encapsulated within the concrete slab. Adequate concrete cover (typically 1.5 to 2 inches) above the heating elements is required, and components must be protected during concrete pouring.

Approved Piping Materials
Illinois Plumbing Code Section 890.110, 890.1220. Piping materials, such as PEX, PEX-AL-PEX, or copper, must be approved for hydronic heating applications and rated for the system's operating temperatures and pressures. All materials must be protected from physical damage and chemical degradation from concrete additives.
Backflow Prevention
Illinois Plumbing Code Section 890.1130. If the hydronic system is connected to a potable water supply for filling or make-up water, an approved backflow prevention device (e.g., reduced pressure principle assembly or air gap) is required to protect the public water system.
System Pressure Testing
Illinois Plumbing Code Section 890.1370. All hydronic piping systems shall be tested with water or air pressure prior to covering or concealment. A minimum test pressure of 100 psi for a minimum of 15 minutes without any visible leaks or drops in pressure is typically required.
Thermal Expansion
Illinois Plumbing Code Section 890.410. Provisions for thermal expansion and contraction of piping must be incorporated into the design and installation to prevent stress on the system and building structure.
Boiler/Water Heater & Venting
Illinois Plumbing Code Section 890.1220(e), IRC M1901, M1801. The boiler or water heater serving the radiant system must be properly sized, installed, and vented in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and all applicable codes. Adequate combustion air must be provided.
Potable Water Protection (Non-Potable Systems)
Illinois Plumbing Code Section 890.1220(d). Hydronic heating systems containing non-potable liquids (e.g., antifreeze solutions) must be permanently separated from any potable water supply lines, except where an approved backflow prevention device is installed for initial filling.

Dedicated Branch Circuits
NEC 424.3(B). Electric heating equipment, including pumps, controls, and electric radiant heating cables/mats, shall be supplied by dedicated branch circuits as required by the manufacturer and NEC.
Overcurrent Protection
NEC 210.20, 240.4. All circuits supplying radiant heating components must be provided with properly sized overcurrent protection devices (breakers/fuses) in accordance with conductor ampacity and equipment ratings.
Wiring Methods & Conductor Sizing
NEC Chapter 3, 310.15. Wiring methods and conductor sizing shall comply with NEC requirements for the specific application, considering ambient temperature, conductor material, and load. All conductors embedded in concrete must be rated for wet locations.
Grounding & Bonding
NEC Article 250. All non-current-carrying metal parts of electrical equipment, enclosures, and raceways associated with the radiant heating system must be effectively grounded and bonded.
Thermostat & Control Wiring
NEC 424.20. Thermostats and other controllers for radiant heating systems shall be installed and wired in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and NEC requirements, including proper wire sizing and protection.
Electric Radiant Heating Cables/Mats in Concrete
NEC 424.44. Specific requirements apply to electric heating cables or mats embedded in concrete or poured masonry slabs, including minimum clearances, protection from physical damage, and proper securing prior to concrete pour.
